Tanner was born in Ada, OK and currently resides in Flower Mound, TX where he attends Coppell High School.  He is one of the youngest players on the Stars team (birthyear 1994).

Tanner has attended two USA Hockey National Select Festival Camps and last season won the Rocky Mountain District Championship and made it to the quarterfinals at the USA Hockey National Championship with the Dallas Stars U14 team.
